Andrew Filmer is a lecturer at Sunway University in his home country of Malaysia and a consultant for the Australian and New Zealand Viola Society, and was Editor of the Journal of the American Viola Society. He holds a PhD from the University of Otago, where he was a New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholar, and a master’s degree in viola performance from Indiana University South Bend, also on a full scholarship. He has studied under Donald Maurice, Anthony Devroye, and Anthony Ritchie.

Andrew has articles published in JAVS, Arco, Stringendo, the ANZVS Journal and String Praxis, and editions by Comus and AVS Publications. He has presented research at the Royal Northern College of Music, the Elder Conservatorium, International Viola Congresses in Germany and Poland, and International Viola Conferences in Auckland and Sydney. He has also facilitated guest lectures at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory and Victoria University of Wellington. He is a prize-winning public speaker, has been featured on Australian national radio, and has been engaged as narrator for the Selangor Symphony’s performance of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, and the Song Weavers’ performance of Shakespeare in Songs.

Prizes include a first place win of the David Dalton Viola Research Competition, performance prizes from the Lilburn Trust, and leadership awards from Indiana University. Outside of Western art music, Andrew was a member of New Zealand jazz band The Troubles, whose debut recording was released on Rattle Records.
